Agriculture & Natural Resources

According to the 2007 Agricultural Census, Pendleton County had 600 farms totaling 169,876 acres. The value of agricultural-related products sold at that time was $91,788,000. The average net income per farm was $36,028. Twelve farms sold 452 hogs and pigs in 2007; 112 farms reported inventory of 5,784 head of sheep. In the poultry industry, 47 farms sold 228,305 layers and 34 farms sold 19,627,735 broilers and other meat-type chickens in 2007. Cow Calf

In 2007, there were 17,801 head of cattle and calves sold from 393 farms. In 2007, there were 3,095 acres of corn harvested, yielding 137 bushels per acre totaling 269,494 bushels, and 1,131 acres of corn cut for silage, yielding 16 tons per acre for a total of 18,408 tons.

To meet the varied interests and needs of the Pendleton County agricultural community, WVU Extension education and research efforts assist clients in creating sustainable agriculture and forestry production and marketing systems that are competitive, environmentally sound, and socially acceptable.

Current agricultural outreach activities in Pendleton County include horticulture, livestock production and marketing, sustainable agriculture, soil nutrients and grassland production, animal health education, biosecurity, natural resource education, environmental education and awareness, youth agriculture development, and adult educational programs.
